A SaaS Access Control System That Works With Biometric Terminals and Manages Entry and Exit Across Many Sites From One Dashboard

Overview

We developed a SaaS that works with biometric authentication terminals to centrally manage entry and exit for organizations with many sites and doors. It supports face, card, PIN, and palm vein authentication, and from a single screen administrators can register employees, set permissions for each door, review history, and manage terminals.

We implemented not only the software but also the hardware side, including communication with the authentication terminals and connection to the reader devices. Since the release, we have continued adding and improving features together with the client.

Challenges

  • The client wanted to bring entry and exit management, split by terminal and site, into a single screen
  • The client wanted to check the status of many terminals, change their settings, and update their firmware without going on site
  • A mechanism was needed to notice suspicious authentications and terminal outages as they happen

What We Did

  • Developed the admin dashboard and the server that communicates with the authentication terminals
  • Two-way synchronization of face, card, PIN, and palm vein credentials between the server and the terminals
  • Developed a relay program for PCs that lets the palm vein reader be used from a browser
  • Automatic terminal discovery, uptime monitoring, remote restart and unlocking, and over-the-air firmware updates

Results

  • Integrated entry and exit management, previously split by site and terminal, into a single admin dashboard
  • Made it possible to do everything from terminal configuration to firmware updates without going on site
  • Achieved an operation in which detection of persons of concern and terminal outages are notified by email so staff can respond immediately

End-to-End Support, Down to the Hardware

AreaWhat we implemented
Communication with authentication terminalsImplemented the terminal manufacturer's communication protocol on the server side, with two-way synchronization of users and biometric data
Palm vein registrationConnected a reader attached to a PC with the browser through a relay program, and distributed the registered data to the terminals
Terminal operationsAutomatic discovery of new terminals, uptime monitoring, remote restart and unlocking
FirmwareManagement of update targets for each terminal, and over-the-air updates through scheduled distribution
Monitoring and notificationsDetection of persons of concern, suspicious authentications, and terminal outages, with email notifications

Because this is development that doesn't end on the screen, we place importance on reading and understanding the specifications of terminals and devices, and on finishing the work while running it on the actual hardware.

Improvement That Continues After Release

We have continued to expand the features step by step since the release. Permission management suited to multi-level organizations, linking palm vein and card authentication, and over-the-air firmware updates are all features we added together with the client after operations began.

Not stopping once it is built, but continuing to grow the system to fit how it is actually used: that is our role as a co-creation partner.

Our Scope of Work

  • Requirements definition
  • Design, development, and testing
  • Integration with terminals and reader devices
  • Feature development and operations after release

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you develop a system that works with our existing authentication terminals and equipment? Yes. In this project, we implemented the terminal manufacturer's communication protocol on the server side and brought everything from synchronizing users and biometric data to remote operation and firmware updates into the admin dashboard.

Can a reader device connected to a PC be used from a web admin dashboard? Yes. In this project, the palm vein reader and the browser are connected through a relay program running on the PC.

Can we request new features after release? Yes. In this project as well, we have added multi-level organizations, palm vein support, and over-the-air firmware updates after release.
