Life Pilot: Developing a Health Support Platform That Takes Corporate Health and Productivity Management to the Next Level

Overview

In health and productivity management, it is important for companies to view employee health from a management perspective and act on it, but many companies faced challenges such as tracking how their health initiatives were being carried out, monitoring employees' health in real time, and sharing health information efficiently. Small and medium-sized companies in particular tended to put health and productivity initiatives off because of limited resources, and improvements in overall company performance were stalling.

Life Pilot was developed to solve these challenges as a health support platform that helps each employee become the "pilot of their own life." Through a comprehensive set of features, including personalized health information delivered via LINE, automated surveys, and expert consultation services, it aims to take corporate health and productivity management to the next level.

The project started in February 2023 and was released in September of the same year. Since then, it has been highly rated by client companies as "efficient and easy to use," and it is contributing to greater health awareness among employees and higher productivity at companies.

Challenges

  • It was hard to see how health initiatives were being carried out, and progress could not be visualized

  • Employees' health could not be monitored in real time, making a quick response difficult

  • Health information was shared by hand, lowering overall efficiency

  • Limited resources meant health and productivity initiatives were put off

  • It was difficult to provide health support optimized for each individual employee

Project Challenges

Through running "GIMMY," a business support service for personal trainers, RASCAL's had been working on supporting individual health, and it also recognized the importance of health and productivity management at companies. It became clear, however, that many companies faced multiple challenges in promoting health and productivity management.

First, even when companies carried out health initiatives, it was hard to visualize their progress and effect, so no one had an overall picture. There was no way to see employees' health in real time, and in many cases companies only responded after a problem had already occurred.

Next, health information was shared by hand or by email, so communication with employees was inefficient and open rates were low. It was also difficult to provide personalized health support suited to each employee's situation, so initiatives tended to be one-size-fits-all.

Furthermore, small and medium-sized companies in particular lacked the resources (people, time, and budget) to work on health and productivity management, so initiatives tended to be put off. People with specialized knowledge were also scarce, which made it difficult to advance health and productivity management effectively.

The aim of this project was to solve these challenges and provide an environment where companies can promote health and productivity management in a sustainable way.

How We Ran the Project

At the start of the project, we held detailed interviews about the challenges companies face in health and productivity management. We carefully gathered the specific problems on the ground, such as tracking how health initiatives are carried out, monitoring employees' health in real time, and sharing health information efficiently, and clarified which features were truly needed.

Next, we focused on "reaching employees" as the most important challenge. To solve the problem of low usage even when a dedicated app is introduced, we decided to use LINE, which people already use every day. By integrating with LINE Official Accounts, employees do not need to install a new app, which raised open rates.

For health content, we prepared more than 250 short videos on a wide range of themes, including exercise, nutrition, stress, and mental health, designed so that employees can watch them in spare moments. We also built a mechanism for delivering information customized to each person's attributes and interests.

In addition, we implemented data visualization so that company administrators can measure the effect of their health initiatives. We provided an admin dashboard where employees' health status and engagement data can be checked in real time, supporting data-driven decision-making.

For automated surveys, we built a mechanism that makes it easy to run the various surveys companies need, such as health literacy measurement, stress checks (compliant with Japanese law), and surveys on childcare and caregiving situations.

We also provided consultation services with experts in exercise, nutrition, and mental health, along with coordination of training and seminars, putting a system in place for companies to receive specialized support.

Since the release in September 2023, we have continuously improved the features based on feedback from client companies, contributing to greater health awareness among employees and better company performance.

We are still working on integrations with other tools and AI-powered feature enhancements to support corporate health and productivity management even more effectively.

Technical Highlights

  • Cloud infrastructure and scalability: GCP: Built on Google Cloud Platform for automatic scaling and high availability. The service stays stable even as a company's headcount grows.

  • Backend development: Go: The backend is written in Go for fast, efficient server-side processing. It efficiently handles large volumes of health data and delivery management.

  • Frontend development: React & Next.js: The frontend is based on React and uses Next.js, which supports server-side rendering and static site generation. This speeds up the initial display and optimizes SEO.

  • LINE integration: Integration with the LINE Official Account API makes delivering health information to employees more efficient. By delivering information through LINE, which people already use every day, rather than a dedicated app, it achieves a high open rate (over 70%).

  • Data management and security: Appropriate security measures and data encryption are in place to manage employees' health information and personal data safely. It also provides a stress check feature that complies with the law.

  • Content delivery system: We built a system to efficiently manage and deliver more than 250 health videos, with personalized delivery based on each person's attributes and interests.
